Santiago Rodriguez Recital September 24, 2010

On Friday, September 24, Cuban-born concert pianist Santiago Rodriguez gave a recital of works by Mozart, Schumann and Rachmaninoff that will long live in the memories of those fortunate enough to have witnessed it.  Playing with utter grace and lack of mannerism, Rodriguez delivered a program of soaring melodic lines, blazing technique, stunning power and shimmering delicacy.

The audience, which nearly filled Trinity University's Ruth Taylor Concert Hall, was left visibly and audibly moved.  Rodriguez favored listeners with one encore: the Caprice Espagnol, Op. 37 by Moszkowski.  This work having brought the audience to its feet in a resounding ovation, many members of the crowd moved on to a dessert reception held at the Skyline Room of the Coates Center.

Santiago Rodriguez has graciously consented to chair the jury of the 2012 San Antonio International Piano Competition.

2009 Gold Medalist Performs with San Antonio Symphony

Ryo Yanagitani, SAIPC 2009 Gold Medalist, performed the Ravel Concerto for the Left Hand and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to critical acclaim with the San Antonio Symphony on November 5 & 6. This concert marked Mr. Yanagitani’s first public appearance since winning the competition and was part of the SAIPC First Prize.

Reviewer David Hendricks of the San Antonio Express-News praised Yanagitani’s performance of the Ravel Concerto as “an intense, forceful interpretation that kept within the overall dark-sky tone of the work”. Of the Gershwin, Hendricks noted that “he took chances with some phrasings, especially in the cadenzas, making the familiar work seem fresh and improvised.”

Critic Mike Greenberg called Mr. Yanagitani “immensely likable in his début with the San Antonio Symphony” and hailed his “ample stamina, dexterity and power to sail above the formidable demands of Ravel’s darkly lyrical concerto.” Read the complete review here.

Ryo Yanagitani will return to San Antonio to perform a solo recital on January 23, 2011 at 4:00 PM at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church. Click here for more information.
