SAIPC IS PLEASED TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF

RUTH JEAN GURWITZ

SAIPC PRESIDENT 1986—2006 SAIPC PRESIDENT EMERITUS 2007—2015

When one speaks of music in San Antonio, the names of Ruth Jean and Arthur Gurwitz immediately enter the conversation. These two individuals and their families have studied, worked for, performed in, and supported the arts in San Antonio for more than seven decades. We honor our dear friend, native San Antonian, former President, and force of will who caused SAIPC to survive and thrive, Ruth Jean Gurwitz.

For SAIPC, Ruth Jean is both a legend and the recipient of our most sincere gratitude, having served as SAIPC’s President and President Emeritus for more than 20 years. She was also a member of and artistic resource for the Tuesday Musical Club, and founder and President of the San Antonio Chamber Music Society. Ruth Jean was our leader, our mentor, our friend.

A walking encyclopedia of San Antonio music history, Ruth Jean’s insight helped SAIPC navigate ways around difficult situations. She led with determination, brought laughter to tense times, and became the essence of SAIPC. So much of what we see and hear during our Competition was initiated by Ruth Jean. We have been blessed by all the gifts she gave to SAIPC, San Antonio, and Texas. Ruth Jean will forever be a part of SAIPC and our Competition, and we are pleased to dedicate our 12th Annual signature Competition in 2016 to her memory.
